Preliminary Exercise 3B: Intro to Genre Conventions Bubble Organizer
Genre in film can be defined as categories that define a movie based on its elements. Its importance to audiences when viewing a film primarily serves as guiding audiences in the right direction of finding films they like. My personal preference when it comes to the genre in film is anything from Comedy, Rom-Com, and Drama. Comedy, one of the most classic genres in film, is meant to be found as humourous and entertaining. Rom-Com, which stands for "Romantic Comedy", is similar to Comedy in the sense that it's humorous. The difference is that Rom-Com is centered on romance and love. Finally, Drama focuses on the realistic conflicts they have. The reason I consider these my top favorite 3 genres is because of how fictional they are. Sure, some may contain amounts of realism, but I like the light-heartedness of it.
For this exercise, we were assigned to talk about the media text being created and how it's supposed to engage the audience. In my case, the media text being created was a movie. The movie is supposed to engage the audience in the same way movies usually do: entertain. People usually watch movies to entertain themselves as a form of escape from reality. The directions of this assignment included: discuss elements of Mise en Scene & construct a bubble diagram to identify our own common knowledge of movies and television. This assignment helped me to further my knowledge of Mise en Scene. Because of the amount of Mise en Scene elements included in this assignment, this was clearer to me after the exercise. With the help of my partner doing this assignment, I was able to gain more insight productively and enjoyably.
