Preliminary Exercise 1: Barthes’ Theory of Denotative and Connotative Signs Semiotic Analysis Table

The objective of this lesson is to teach about semiotics and the role it plays in film. Semiotics is defined as the study of signs, symbols, and signification in film. Roland Barthes was a French literary theorist, essayist, philosopher and much more. Barthes is the gentleman responsible for the theory of semiology. His theory was that Semiology aims to take in any system of signs whatever their substances and limits like; images, gestures, musical sounds, and objects.

Our objective on learning about this task was to introduce and inform us on the history of Barthes' theory. Me, personally, besides what I learned from Barthes' theory, I understood how connotations and denotations correlate to Semiotics. Of course, I knew what they meant before, but they are used slightly different in the world outside of Semiology. I worked on this task alongside one other person.
